Currents Editor Sami West indulges her inner sweet tooth at Sue’s Deluxe Bake Shop

If heaven is a place in Eau Claire filled with sweet treats galore, then it’s in Sue’s Deluxe Bake Shop.
Donuts, cookies, breads, buns, decorated cakes, angel food cakes, danishes, bars… Any sort of sweet, whether technically a breakfast food or a dessert, can be found in this shop.
After a long Monday of classes and other obligations, a friend and I made our way to the bake shop conveniently located in downtown Eau Claire in search of some tasty treats we were sure to regret indulging in at a later date.
The homey, glorious scent of baked goods and a cheery woman working behind the counter warmly welcomed us to the store. We took one look at the huge case of freshly baked goods and knew we were in heaven.
You can imagine our shock when the worker at the counter apologized to us for the lack of variety in front of us.
“If you could’ve came by earlier, there would’ve been more to choose from,” she told us.
My friend and I exchanged glances communicating something along the lines of “How in the world could they have had more of a selection?”
We laughed at the woman, who assured us she was serious about the selection. We simply continued to laugh.
Despite their self-declared lack of a selection, my friend and I had a hard time determining what we should buy, especially when the prices were so affordable.
I couldn’t possibly choose which goods I wanted to try, so I just didn’t. Figuring I’d savor my treats for the entire week and obviously share with my friends, I splurged. Or at least that’s what I thought I was doing.
For about nine dollars I was able to buy a combination of six donuts and danishes and a dozen peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.
I fully realize how obnoxious it is to buy that amount of baked goods for one person, but in my mind, nine dollars is almost nothing for what I got. Everything was as delicious as I’d gathered from what others had told me and how heavenly the store smelled.
Still, I caution fellow sweet tooths — don’t do what I did. Don’t buy that much. Don’t torture yourself by having to choose just one to enjoy from all of the delicious goods you’ve just purchased.
I told myself, “I’m really hungry, I’ll just eat multiple because I can.”
Wrong. So wrong.
I was one flakey caramel donut deep and I could go no further … At least for another hour.
Then I could only eat another half a donut that I so desperately wanted to finish. It was delicious.
The feeling of how unfair it was that I was not hungry enough for the rest of the donut at that point in time was overwhelming.
On top of that, the sugar high and crash were real. So real I had to drink a ton of water and take a thirty minute catnap before diving into my homework for the evening.
Aside from the obvious lack of thinking on my part in trying to stuff my face with as many sweets as possible, the only thing that could’ve made my experience better is if I’d been able to start my day in Sue’s, a cup of coffee and donut in hand.
I implore you, if you’ve got a sweet tooth you feel you have not been able to fully satisfy in your time in Eau Claire, go to Sue’s Deluxe Bake Shop immediately. You will not be disappointed.
