A group of Blugolds dressed in costume enjoyed last year’s “Rocky Horror Picture Show” screening. This year’s event will be at 11:59 p.m. Saturday in the Davies Center.

If you’re tired of the same old tradition of watching movies and shoving your face with popcorn alone in your room, or in a theater that restricts blurting and throwing things, break the cycle by experiencing “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the Davies Center.

The University Activities Commission will be hosting their annual event, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was released in 1975 as a musical comedy and horror starring Tim Curry, Richard O’Brien, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf.

Melissa Wysocki, senior marketing student and film chair of UAC, said this event has been a tradition for at least 20 years on campus and is popularly hosted at other college institutions as well.

Wysocki said she hopes that this annual event will get people more involved in the events UAC provides for students. She said she feels it’s a good way to get them to recognize that by having the event every year.

Every year UAC creates different film schedules on campus to prevent students from seeing the same film, but being able to show something consistently, such as “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” is a fun way to keep their name out there, Wysocki said.

“It’s a really fun event that people make a tradition to come to,” Wysocki said.

“Rocky Horror” may appear to be like every other cheesy, archaic horror film heard of. However, to most the traditional aspect of the screening is the heart of it all and is what provokes more student participation, Wysocki said.

The showing involves dancing, costumes, which UAC will hold a contest for, and goodie bags containing props to accompany the movie, Wysocki said. Certain props and lines go with certain scenes. For instance, in the beginning there’s a wedding scene during which audience members will throw the rice from their goodie bags, Wysocki said.

“Usually when you watch a movie you sit back and eat popcorn and that’s it. This movie lets you interact with it. You’re actually allowed to talk during the movie,” Wysocki said.

She said she has never seen a movie presented this way before, where you can interact with it so much. One of the fun things she loves about the event is the interaction with props and being able to be so active in a movie screening.

“It’s more than just a screening. It’s an audience-interaction kind of show,” Wysocki said.

In addition to the movie screening there will be a Student Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT) booth offering information about sexual awareness.

Because Rocky Horror contains a lot of sexual innuendo and deals with taboo issues, Wysocki said this is a good event to pair SWAT with so they can get their information out there.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will be screening at 11:59 p.m. Saturday in Davies. It will be $5 for students and $8 for the general public.
