Spec Songs
Get up and get moving with the Spectator’s workout playlist on Spotify
This week for Spec Songs, there are no cuts of obscure records that tell a deep musical history. There’s also no genre-bending, redefining songs that transform a perspective on music or reach people in a deep nostalgic way.
This week the focus is on music people need to get moving. Artists like 21 Savage and NBA Youngboy are not known for their mind-warping wordplay or deep meaningful lines, but there’s a time and a place for the section of hip-hop which they occupy.
Whether going for a run, lifting some weights or balling up with some friends, the subgenres of hip-hop referred to as gangsta rap and drill rap have it covered. Their aggressive lyricism and pounding base can get anyone energized and ready to get after it. Listen to the energizing workout playlist here on Spotify.

Oludare is a fourth-year journalism student and this is his fifth semester on The Spectator. He likes watching basketball and is pretty mediocre at it, but that doesn't stop him from playing it. He has a small but growing record collection and believes Woody Harrelson is a style icon and national treasure — fact not opinion.
