The news column “COVID on campus” posts relevant COVID-19 news every week for UWEC students.

Over the past week, the state of Wisconsin has seen an overall drop of COVID-19 related statistics according to the data provided from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has an active website displaying information about COVID-19 deaths, hospital bed use percentages and confirmed probable cases.

The website also has a section for frequently asked questions.

For the past week a list of statewide COVID-19 data was issued by The Wisconsin DHs.

As of April 14, 2022, 804 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were added to the system for a weekly average of 626 cases per day. As of April 14, 2022 Wisconsin residents had COVID-19 symptom onset or diagnosis (288 confirmed cases and 69 probable cases).

The Wisconsin DHS said, the seven day average of confirmed plus probable cases of COVID-19 was 600.

The WDHS said that during the week of April 10, 2022, there were 203 Wisconsin residents aged 18-24 who had onset or diagnosis with a confirmed case of COVID-19, which was a rate of 37 per 100,000 residents aged 18-24.

On April 14, 2022, two deaths were added to the system as deaths due to COVID-19 for a weekly average of 3 confirmed COVID-19 deaths per day, said the DHS.

(Calculated to only include deaths for which date of death was in the past 30 days.)

According to the Wisconsin DHS, on April 11, in Wisconsin, the weekly moving average of COVID patients hospitalized was 193 patients. Of the hospitalized COVID patients, 9.9% needed ventilators.

The Wisconsin DHS said on April 10, in Wisconsin the weekly moving average of hospital bed use was 87.7%. The average ICU bed use was 84.5%, and the average ventilator use was 14.6%.

On the Wisconsin DHS website, there are graphs indicating that Wisconsin is on the downslope of the recent spikes.

An email from Brian Drollinger, the director of risk management, safety and sustainability, provided more facts about last week’s COVID-19 tests on campus.

“The UW-Eau Claire campus had three COVID tests completed at the Student Health Services.

However at the Hilltop Site, 231 covid tests were completed including 68 community members,”  the email said.

The UW-Eau Claire campus, alongside the state of Wisconsin is on a downslope of recent COVID-19 spikes. With the help of masks, consistent testing and distancing will continue to help keep the spread of COVID-19 down in Wisconsin Communities everywhere.

Students can go to the UW-Eau Claire Student Health Services website for more information about testing, vaccination and other COVID-19 protocols or call 715-836-5360 to reach the Student Health Service.
