Fleeing with freedom

At 11:57 p.m. on Nov. 10, an officer was dispatched to vandalism in-progress occurring on the campus mall near Davies Center. They had received a call from a male subject who witnessed two male subjects running from the area of the Veterans Flag Presentation.

Both males were holding a flag and running behind Phillips Hall, according to the police report.

The officer traveled to the campus mall and noticed seven flags were knocked down. Placing four of the flags back into the ground, the officer placed the remaining three near the southeast entrance of Schofield Hall.

The officer read The Spectator’s article “Luncheon, speaker among events planned on campus to honor Veteran’s Day” from Oct. 29 and recalled the flags displayed on campus were available to purchase for $30.

On Nov. 12, the officer was assigned to conduct a follow-up to this case. She reviewed camera footage of the Davies Center and Schofield entrances but did not observe anyone matching the original description of the two males.

The two cameras pointing in the direction of the campus mall were down for maintenance so footage of the area was not caught, according to the report.

The officer talked with the Military Education Benefits Coordinator regarding the missing flags. She said the flags would be counted for inventory at the end of the week in an attempt to determine which flags had been taken.

She also said these flags could be purchased to honor veterans and although it may have been unlikely, the two males seen running with the flags may have previously purchased them.

Flying objects

A case of vandalism brought the University Police to investigate around 7:23 a.m. on Nov. 10 at Hilltop Center.

The complainant reported she found her office window had been damaged when she arrived to her office that morning. According to the police report, it seemed an object had struck the outside glass pane. There was shattered glass spread throughout the office.

An object that could have been used to cause this damage was not found inside the office, but a golf ball was located about 25 feet out from the window according to the report.

A short time later the University Police was notified again of another broken window on the second floor of Hilltop Center’s dining area. The window’s damage was the same as the first floor damage.

Both of the broken windows face north overlooking Horan Hall’s backyard area where police suspect the objects were thrown from.

The damages are being looked at for repair.

Soda can or smoking device?

A student patrol member contacted University Police around 7:45 p.m. on Nov. 12. She had found a soda can made into a marijuana pipe located in Putnam Park, according to the police report.

The can seemed to be thrown off the walking trail about 100 yards west of Putnam Rock. There was nobody around when she located the pipe and no leads as to who may own it.

The can had black residue material on it indicating that it was used to smoke marijuana. The can was weathered and appeared that it had been outside for an extended amount of time, according to the report.

Since there was no evidentiary value to the pipe, the officer destroyed it in front of the student patrol member and threw it away.
