Students are having a hard enough time getting into required classes as it is, and taking away a popular elective such as photography for at least two semesters is just adding fuel to the fire.
The university already puts classes in the catalogue that are rarely offered, and now photography could be among those on the list if the new media center and three-part renovation is approved by the UW System.
Part of the renovation plan calls for the Communication and Journalism wet lab to move to Haas Fine Arts Center after the multi-million dollar expansion and share quarters with the art photography lab .
The photography classes may run into problems other than just not being offered during construction unless other arrangements are made. The classes themselves will be compromised. Two classes cannot feasibly work in one lab at the same time.
In addition, the new media center would house the TV and radio station, now located in Haas Fine Arts Center, and a computer lab. The room is big enough to be designated for all CJ and electronic media majors and minors, but not limited to them.
Also, the fact that WUEC, the campus radio station, will be housed in a new million dollar facility, although it received no funding this year, seems ridiculous.
The administration seems to have left some people out in the cold with this plan. Faculty in both the Art and CJ Department didn’t know what was going on. This includes professors who teach the photography classes. Students are the ones affected by this change and were not taken into consideration either.
The administration should check to see if students want these changes to be made. If this isn’t a popular idea, they should reconsider carrying the project out.
