If the students at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa want to play a naked soccer game in the middle of the night, let them. It is all in good fun.
The school wants to end the game by videotaping it to identify students in the ritual end-of-the-year game. The match has been part of the schools tradition since 1997, and hasn’t caused any severe problems yet. But players need to be responsible and make sure teammates don’t ruin it for everyone by taking the game too far.
There have been some players who streaked through the dorm halls and knocked on residents’ doors. That could be considered sexual harassment and is unacceptable. The players should take into consideration that those who want to be part of the game probably already are, and the others should be left alone.
In the more recent years, fans have started attending the games. Fans can have their fun, but need to be respectful of other spectators at the same time.
School officials who want to put an end to the game have requested that police videotape the game, but there are obvious complications with that.
The school is wrong, and the police should deal with the situation the same way they have in the past.
They should follow up on any sexual harassment cases promptly so that no situation gets out of control and leads to a more serious problem. The police and the school should treat the game the same way they treat any homecoming or major party holiday.
This is just a game, and as long as people are not out of control there should be nothing wrong with some good, naked fun … and watch the high kicking.
