Hi everyone. Welcome or welcome back to “In the key of E.” Let’s not waste any time and get started.
Weekly recap
There’s not a lot to say this week. Class assignments are more time-consuming than they were before and the due dates of bigger projects for my classes are creeping in.
Blugold Radio is still a no-go. The studio isn’t usable yet. I didn’t realize until now how much I enjoyed sitting down and recording a podcast once a week. I hope we get to record again soon.
The most important part of my week, in my opinion, was going home. It was my mom’s birthday. It was on Sunday, so I got to spend Thursday until then searching for a good recipe for a cake.
This year was calmer than years in the past. My first year at UW-Eau Claire, her birthday was on a Thursday. I had a class online at 8:30 am, but I wanted to surprise her with a cake.
A lot of you probably see a pretty simple workaround for this time conflict — I do my Zoom class and then leave right after it’s done, right? Wrong. I decided to get up at 4:45 a.m., drive to my grandma’s house in the town over from my family’s and bake a cake there.
Was it the smartest idea? I’m not sure. The roads were really empty though, so that was definitely a plus.
This year, I made the cake on her birthday. The flavor combo usually consists of lemon cake and some other fruit-flavored frosting. This year I decided to go with blueberry cream cheese frosting.
During the process of making the batter, everything went well. I filled two round cake pans with batter and put it in the oven. While waiting, I started the frosting. The recipe suggested that I make the frosting in a food processor which I wasn’t used to, but I did.
It didn’t turn out bad … But it also didn’t turn out great. It was really thin. I kind of ended up just spreading it between the layers and dumping a bit onto the top of the cake. It definitely wasn’t the prettiest, but I got the stamp of approval on the taste from my family, so that’s all that matters.
From me to you
To be completely honest, I’m not feeling the whole giving advice thing today. Tune in next week, when it will (maybe) be extra special and insightful.
