Students come from all over campus. Some are unathletic or have never even touched a basketball before but want to try something new. All with the opportunity to get involved on campus.
According to the UW-Eau Claire homepage, intramural sport activities are offered to meet the physical, social and recreational needs of the student body, from beginners to skilled athletes.
Students don’t need to be sporty to participate in these activities.
The gym in the McPhee Physical Education Center basement on any given weeknight is filled with sweaty students, and shoes squeaking against the floor. Shouting and laughter can be heard from players and fans.
The gym is sprawling and packed with games on every court, with skill levels ranging from beginner to more experienced.
Sophomore Meredith Watson said intramural sports are “nice, because you get to play sports with all of your friends and it’s still pretty competitive.”
Watson said her favorite part of intramurals is the competitive aspect. She has participated in two intramural basketball leagues and also plays in a volleyball league.
“It’s a good time,” Watson said.
Over 40 men’s, women’s and co-ed teams are offered to students who are interested in trying a new sport or casually dabbling in a sport they may have played in high school. Even the overly competitive kid from high school gym class is invited.
The winter and spring intramural teams began games on Feb.8 and end on March 11. Indoor basketball, soccer, volleyball and bowling are all offered during this time.
Students from a winning intramural basketball team said their favorite part of the league is getting to come out and play with the guys. They also said it is a good way to stay in shape.
“It’s a lot more relaxed and people don’t take it too seriously,” sophomore Mitchell Hickerson said about his experience with the basketball team. “It’s a way to stay competitive, but still have fun and enjoy the sport”.
Students can register to play online and are encouraged to register sooner rather than later to ensure their team has a spot in the league. Rules and regulations can also be found online.
