UWEC Women’s Lacrosse spring into their first outdoor game
Women’s Lacrosse step out of McPhee and onto the turf
The UW-Eau Claire Women’s Lacrosse team competed at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29 at Simpson Field here in Eau Claire against Hamline University.
According to the Blugolds athletics page, this game was the home opener for the Blugolds — their fifth game so far in the season. The team was able to play on the turf field at Simpson Field for the first time as temperatures began to rise.
Aubrianne Neubert, the Women’s Lacrosse head coach, said that the team supported each other, even through tough situations like their game during a blizzard in Chicago. She said the team had drive this past game.
“It was hard coming into that game because so many of our previous games have been canceled and we haven’t really been able to get into a rhythm at all,” Neubert said. “I was really happy with how they played knowing everything that has happened this season.”
The Blugolds won their game 11-8 against the Hamline University Pipers. According to the game’s box scores, UW-Eau Claire scored five points in the first quarter with Hamline scoring three.
In the second quarter the Pipers scored two goals, while the Blugolds scored one, ending the first half of the game at 6-5 for the Blugolds.
During the third quarter the teams switched sides and the Blugolds scored three goals to the Pipers two. Going into the last quarter the score was 9-7 for the Blugolds.
The last quarter only saw a total of three goals. The Pipers scored one goal and the Blugolds scored two, ending the game with the 11-8 score.
This game marked the second win for the Blugolds according to their athletics schedule. The team won on Monday, March 13, at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis against Augsburg.
Alexie Romanelli, a second-year physical education student, said it was great to be able to play on the turf again and get outside.
“For the first time being outside, I think it went really well and I think we just have to work on not letting the challenges of the weather impact us, and keep fighting that mental game,” Romanelli said.
However, according to their schedule, the Blugolds have had eight scheduled games at this point in the season. The team has had three games postponed, the most recent being their game against UW-Stout on Saturday, April 1.
According to a Blugolds athletics article, on March 28, the Women’s Lacrosse team had their game against Hamline moved up an hour and their game against UW-Stout moved to Eau Claire, still counting as a home game for UW-Stout.
On March 30, another athletics article was published stating that the game against UW-Stout at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, had been moved to 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 2.
Two days later on April 1, another athletics article was published saying that the game against UW-Stout was canceled for Sunday, April 2. The game is set to be postponed, but no date has been set for the makeup game.
The Blugolds next game is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, at Simpson Field here in Eau Claire. The game is against UW-Stout, a preplanned game that will eventually be followed up by the April 2 makeup game.
