A review of UW-Eau Claire spring sports
UW-Eau Claire’s 2023 spring sports season has come to an end.
Men’s Spring Sports
This was the third year of men’s baseball since the team was reinstated after 25 years of not playing. The season started off on Feb. 17 at Rhodes College and was set to end on May 8 with a game versus Carleton, but the game was postponed.
The team currently stands at an overall score of 10-27 with a total of two wins and eight losses at home, and four wins and 15 losses away. According to the WIAC website, the UW-Eau Claire baseball team is seventh in the conference.
Men’s golf competed in four invitationals over the month of April. In their first invitational at Illinois Wesleyan University, the team placed fifth overall out of 37 teams at the tournament.
Men’s golf final invite was the Saint John’s Spring Invitational, held on April 29 and 30 in Monticello, Minnesota. The team was split into two, placing both second and fourth overall.
Men’s tennis played their first match of the season on Jan. 29 at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Overall, for the season the team had 11 wins and 10 losses.
Next year for the first time since 1995, the team will be back in the WIAC conference, as they are currently in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Men’s outdoor track and field competed in four invites throughout their season across April and May. According to Blugold Athletics, the team placed fourth overall in the WIAC Championships.
The men’s outdoor track and field team is still in season with one more invite until the NCAA Qualifiers on May 18 at Augustana, Illinois.
Women’s Sports
Women’s golf spring season, which ended in April, had three invitationals. The most recent invite was on April 29, hosted by UW-Stout, where the team placed third overall.
The women’s tennis team’s spring season ran from February through May and they had an overall score of 6-7.
In the WIAC Championship, women’s tennis placed second overall, only falling to UW-Whitewater.
This year was the second full season for the women’s lacrosse team at UW-Eau Claire. They started in 2020, but the season was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Throughout their season, the women’s lacrosse team had an overall score of 7-5. They ended their regular season with a win against Concordia University Chicago, with a score of 14-2.
Softball had an overall score of 17-17. The team’s more recent games were against UW-La Crosse, the first being a loss of 0-2 and the second being a win of 4-2.
The team is set to play their first game in the WIAC tournament against UW-La Crosse again at 11:30 a.m. on May 11.
Similar to the men’s outdoor track and field, the women’s outdoor track and field team competed in four invitationals.
The women’s team placed second overall in the WIAC Championships. They have another invitational on May 12 before the NCAA Qualifier event at Augustana, Illinois.
Looking forward to next season, both men’s tennis and women’s lacrosse will be part of the WIAC.
