Fifth-year math education student and men’s golf team co-captain Corey Boerner scored a 66 in his third round of the Twin Cities Classic Golf Tournament on Sept. 23, tying the UW-Eau Claire single-round tournament record.

Boerner said he started playing golf with his dad when he was around seven years old, and his competitive career began at age 10.

“I played a couple of different sports growing up,” Boerner said. “I think I was about 12 years old when I really started to realize I had a knack for golf.”

Boerner said he had a few other notable accomplishments during his time in high school and college. In addition to winning a handful of junior tournaments, Boerner won a golf tournament and had the top-scoring average on the Blugold team his freshman year.

“I’d say my 15 minutes of fame was when I qualified for the Drive, Chip & Put National Finals at Augusta National,” Boerner said. “It’s a junior contest they hold before the masters and I took home the third-place title.”

According to Boerner, he decided to join the Blugold golf team towards the end of his senior year of high school.

“I really enjoyed competitive golf and I really wanted to continue the experience,” Boerner said. “There’s a great competitive atmosphere here and once I got recruited I knew I was going to have to put in the work to contribute to the team.”

In addition to tying the school record, Boerner climbed 16 spots after his third round on Saturday earning him the co-champion title, according to Blugold Athletics

“I’ve always considered myself a hard worker,” Boerner said. “I try to stay disciplined and organized, which helps me in school and as a golfer. These are qualities I see in myself as a student as well.”

Boerner said he goes into practice with clear priorities and plays to his strengths.

“The strength of my game has always been the short game, so a lot of chipping and putting,” Boerner said. “That’s where I spend a lot of my time. It is a priority of mine during every practice.”

According to Boerner, his family has influenced his success and furthered his golf career.

“My family has done so much to get me where I am,” Boerner said. “My dad has been especially encouraging and he is the reason why I am even here in Eau Claire.”

Boerner said he has made long-lasting friendships with many of his teammates and is extremely grateful for everyone who has impacted his life on and off the course.

“I’m not the strongest mental player and I get down on myself, but I have such encouraging teammates and a great coach,” Boerner said. “Some of my best friends for life are on this golf team.”

According to fourth-year business administration student and co-captain Carson Brock, the team tries to support each other and encourage their teammates to perform their best.

“No matter if someone is playing good or bad, we try to support them and have each other’s back,” Brock said. “If someone plays good we’re gonna amp them up, and if they struggle we try to be there for them.”

The team was extremely excited and encouraging when they heard about Boerner’s record, according to Brock.

“This past weekend was a team effort,” Boerner said. “We have such a great and supportive team this year. I owe all my success to my teammates and my coach.”

According to Boerner, he intends to continue golfing after college and he plans on coaching golf in the future.

“I hope I stay involved with the game,” Boerner said. “Maybe it won’t be playing, but it will be helping others play better. At some point, I might even be coaching my own kids.”

The Blugold golf team’s next tournament will be held at 8 a.m. from Oct. 15 through Oct. 17 at the Golfweek DIII Invitational. Allessi can be reached at [email protected].
