Scoring burst leads to victory for women’s soccer
For about 70 minutes Saturday, the UW-Eau Claire women’s soccer team couldn’t find the net.
During the last 20 minutes, however, the Blugolds found the net often, scoring three times in that span to beat the Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) Gusties 3-0 in front of 68 people in St. Peter, Minn. It was the first game for a Blugold squad in 2013.
At the 73:12 mark of the second half, just 16:48 remaining before the final whistle, junior Teighlor Tvedt knocked in a goal off an assist from senior Paige LeGate.
Three minutes and four seconds later, sophomore Caroline Henderson drove the ball from midfield and knocked in an unassisted goal to give the Blugolds a comfortable 2-0 lead.
For good measure, senior Kara Ryan netted one at the 83:02 mark of the game on a corner kick assist from sophomore Tara Dennehy to put the game out of reach at 3-0.
The offensive spurt that lasted just over 10 minutes was more than enough to secure the victory. Senior Blugold goalie Ninah Behrenbrinker from St. Paul, Minn., recorded the shutout in goal and only made two saves on two Gusties’ shots on goal.
The Blugolds outshot the Gusties by a total of 20-8. Read all about the expectations of the 2013 Eau Claire women’s soccer team in the season preview coming out Thursday.
