The UW-Eau Claire men’s and women’s indoor track teams continued their impressive starts to the season at the Warren Bowlus Open at UW-Stout Saturday.
Against seven other schools, the teams were able to show off their veteran talent, as the men’s team finished second of eight schools and the women finished third.
It was a tale of senior prowess for the Blugold women, with senior Jen Stafslien carrying the load by obtaining three of the four total individual victories on the day. She took first in the long and triple jumps, and paced the field in the 55-meter hurdles. Stafslien long-jumped a distance of 17 feet, 4 inches, triple-jumped 37-2.5, and ran a time of 8.56 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, outpacing sophomore teammate Liz Faller.
She was pleased about her effort but knew the team’s finish was far more important.
“Basically, I just did what I could for the team,” Stafslien said. “I don’t necessarily worry about placing high. We just want to do well as a team.”
The Blugold men’s track team did one better, finishing in second place with 178 points, only a few shy of Duluth’s meet-leading 182.5.
The team had seven first-place finishes, keyed by a pair of wins by senior John Schuna in the shot put and weight throw. His throws of 56-7.5 in the shot put and 53-2.75 in the weight throw were less than the previous meet at Stout, but still sufficient for first place.
“I wasn’t totally disappointed in my performance, but I could have done better,” Schuna said.
Senior Eric Johnson also notched two victories, with a long jump distance of 20-11.25, and a triple jump distance of 43-3.75.
Both Blugold teams will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to St. Olaf, Minn. for their respective meets.
