The men’s tennis team finished spring break undefeated at Hilton Head (S.C.).
The six-meet trip started last Sunday as the Blugolds faced the University of Scranton (Penn.), achieving a 7-2 victory. All the matches were won in straight sets. The team only lost two matches for No. 1 and No. 2 place, but freshman Lars Olson came in at No. 3. In doubles sophomore Phil Loprinzi and junior Steve Lantz finished at No. 1.
“It was our first match outdoors in the whole season,” Olson said. “It took some getting used to, but our team played really well and it was a good victory.”
Monday the team came back with an 8-1 over Hobart University (N.Y.). Lantz did not come in at No. 1, but it still was a close match 6-7, 6-2, that finished in a super-tiebreak with 10-7 to Hobart. It was the last loss for the team. It also won all three doubles matches.
On Tuesday, the Blugolds had two meets. The first against Nazareth College (N.Y) brought a 9-0 victory followed by 9-0 later on that day against Greenville College (Ill.) The team won all matches against Nazareth in straight sets, except for one in which Lantz, who finished at No. 1, closed the game against Nazareth in a super-tiebreak of 10-2. Sophomore Kevin Fawcett and senior Erik Brandner had close matches, but managed to finish at No. 3 and No. 4 with 7-5, 6-1, and 7-6, 6-1, respectively. The rest of the matches against Greenville were all won by larger margins.
“(Playing two meets in one day) wasn’t bad,” Fawcett said. “We were prepared and we were consistent, I feel we were ready for it.”
Wednesday the Blugolds went against Tiffin University and won the meet 8-1. On singles, at No.1 Lantz pulled the match with a super-tiebreak of 10-3, while Loprinzi fell in a super-tiebreak of 10-4, but all double games were won.
The men’s tennis team’s last meet was against Grove City College (Penn.), in which the Blugolds finished their spring break trip with a 5-4 victory. “It’s great when I can have individual success, but it’s even better when the team wins.” Olson said. “I’m more focused on our team winning.”
The men came back on, with a perfect 6-0 record during spring break. Olson said this was a great accomplishment. This Sunday they will face Hamline University (Minn.) and MSU-Mankato (Minn.).
“We did fine,” freshman Chris Thornton said. “We got better as we went along and we stepped up to every challenge we faced.”
Freshmen Brett Burleigh echoed his teammate saying they “did awesome.”
Coach Tom Gillman said he was very proud of the team.
“Our team was ready to play, we have to work on consistency in singles,” he said. “Our doubles have come a long way. Our team work and effort really paid off.”
