When they needed it most, the UW-Eau Claire men’s hockey team prevailed against rival UW-Stout in a decisive 6-1 win, breaking a four-game losing streak.
The win is the second time this season the Blugolds have beaten the Blue Devils, a feat that hasn’t happened since the 1999-2000 season. Earlier in the year, the team shutout Stout 3-0 and also tied the team 2-2.
During Thursday’s game in Menomonie, Stout was actually first on the board seven minutes and nine seconds into the first period. But Eau Claire would control the rest of the game.
A goal by senior D.J. Clark kicked off the Blugold’s dominance just over a minute before the end of the first period. During the second period, Eau Claire’s offense shined and found the back of the net four times:
Freshman Jordan Singer scored at the 2:12 mark
Freshman Isaiah Bennis earned a goal 6:05 minutes into the period
Sophomore Tyler Romasco put another point on the board 11:31 minutes in
Freshman Bryce Wilcox scored at 18:20 into the second period
Sophomore Nic Weight finished the scoring for the night with a goal 8:44 into the final period. In total, the Blugolds outshot the Blue Devils 32-24 and converted on 2-of-6 power plays.
The win improves the team’s record to 3-9-3 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings and 7-12-3 overall. The team will next face UW-River Falls on Saturday.
