Women’s hockey goes 0-1-1 in first series of season (Brief)
After a doubleheader against non-conference opponent St. Scholastica (Minn.) this weekend, the Blugold women’s hockey team fell to 0-1-1 in the early stages of their season. They tied 2-2 in their first bout at Hobbs Ice Center on Friday and then lost 4-0 the following day at the same venue.
Friday night, Junior Andi Husted scored first for UW-Eau Claire, netting an early first period goal just 1:17 into game play. The Saints responded later in the same period, tying things up at 1-1.
The Blugolds once again scored first in the second period, putting away another goal 7:26 into the period. St. Scholastica responded, rallying just four minutes later to put things at an even 2-2. This was the final score after an overtime period.
Saturday’s game was a different story, as the Saints came out strong and stuck with that trend.
A series of power plays led to a 4-0 Saints’ win over the Blugolds.
Although sophomore Paige Turner continued her strength at goal by fending off 29 attempted shots, the Saints proved more aggressive with nine more shots on goal than Eau Claire.
The Blugolds will face off in a two-game series against St. Kates (Minn.) this weekend — 7:30 p.m. on Friday on the road, and 2 p.m. on Saturday at home.
