A sense of deja vu was prominent after the UW-Eau Claire women’s soccer team fell to UW-Oshkosh 1-0 for the second straight year in the WIAC semifinals Thursday night.
Eau Claire lost the previous matchup to Oshkosh this season 3-0, however this match was different. The Blugolds were awarded two corner kicks in the first half, while holding the Titans to zero. They also fired four shots on goal, but it was not enough as Oshkosh continued to handle possession of the ball.
Just 13 minutes into the first half, Oshkosh senior striker Christina Mauthe scored the lone goal after back and forth action to open the half.
In the second half, sophomore goalie Lefaive saved five shots to give her a total of nine saves on the day, keeping the Blugolds within striking distance. Eau Claire seniors Tara Dennehy and Ashley Seymour continued to try to put an equalizing goal on net as they both had two shots on goal, but were unsuccessful.
The Blugolds finished the season with a 6-10-3 record overall that saw them win four conference games and their first game in the WIAC tournament. Eau Claire will lose five seniors in Dennehy, Seymour, Ashley O’Connell, Megan Hanson and Caroline Henderson.
